Lost Words Postcard Exchange
PROMPT
Find an extinct, out of use, arcane, highly unusual or peculiar word in the English language that you could use in a sentence to describe some aspect of yourself. There are many sites online listing such words, as well as dictionaries dedicated to weird words, or you could just read a dictionary to find one. Write your self portrait sentence using the word. It can be a detail or fragment without much context, it can be highly poetic or stoically straight-forward, it can be about your past, or something more current. Try to have fun with it! We will each set our word in a large typeface that we choose, and then set the definition and our self portrait sentence in a smaller typeface. We will print these on chipboard in red and black, use the corner rounder to round the corners, and exchange them so we’ll each get a set of everyone’s cards.
PROJECT GUIDELINES
Once you have chosen your typefaces and have set your type, pull a proof on the proof press, then create a mock-up by cutting them out and taping to a rectangle that is the same size as the final paper. This will allow you to design exactly where you want the type to live on the postcard and aid in positioning the form onto the press bed.
