Storage Book

Background
The storage book is a concertina book structure invented by Hedi Kyle. (German born, taught at University of the Arts in Philadelphia). It's a versatile structure as it allows you to insert windows, doors, piercings, sewing, embedments, cutouts, mirrors, and pop-ups or mechanicals, such as the Volvelle in Valerie Carragan's model (she is based in Mass. and teaches at Bryant University, R.I.). It's also a very clean and simple binding, and would be great for working with deeply debossed prints if you didn't want the backside to be visible. Macy Chadwick (In Cahoots Press & Residency, Petaluma, CA) is an artist who has worked extensively with this structure, as you'll see in the photos here! Also check out Daniella Napolitano's 40 Winks in the Student Gallery section!

Materials
  • 3.5" x 8" Tyvek strip
  • Nine 3.5" x 7" sheets of paper, folded in half
  • 1/4" 3M 315 double-sided tape from Talas

Examples in ASU Rare Books & Collections
  • Macy Chadwick, Topography of Home
  • Sarah Bryant, Point of View
  • Tatiana Kellner, My 9 Migraine Cures
Guidelines
  • Fold paper  for pages in half. Design, cut, invent, embellish.
  • Fold Tyvek strip into 16 panels. This can be easily stained using acrylic ink. See photo in slideshow.
  • Attach 1/4" double-sided tape to mountain folds, close to the seam, but not right on it. Wait to peel off the protection until you're ready to attach each page. I recommend attaching one side at a time so you can line everything up carefully.
  • It's possible to use a thicker material for the covers, see examples.
