Mama's Sauce: A Modern Day Print Shop

4/13/2016

by Meaghan Socaciu

As a designer and a letterpress printing enthusiast, the way we print things today on a press interests me. There are many modern day print shops, but one in particular that stands out is called Mama’s Sauce. Mama’s Sauce is a commercial spot color print shop founded in 2007 in Orlando, Florida that specializes in letterpress, screen printing, and other specialty print methods.

My first thought was although they do letterpress printing, that maybe they would have updated equipment- some sort of modern day machines that would let them print more quickly with the same quality. Mama’s Sauce, however, still uses antique production equipment! At their print shop, they use Windmills, Kluges, C&Ps, Vandercooks, a Kelsey and a Challenge. They pride themselves in the ink and the paper they use, and their spot color printing technique.

Mama’s Sauce particularly interests me because, as a large modern day print shop, they combine the old art of letterpress printing with ultra-modern art and design. They do everything from the standard business cards and expected wedding invitations, to art and design prints made by artists around the word.

Mama’s Sauce has quite a few informational videos about letterpress at the link below -

This print shop is really cool! I love their style, it really reflects the type of work that is popular in the designer world. It would be interesting to see their process of designing, since they're involved with such a hands-on medium like letterpress, but they probably design most of their stuff digitally. The Windmill platen in the picture is beautiful!

It's interesting that you bring up Mama's Sauce. I've been following them for years! They were probably my first exposure to letterpress printing. I remember watching one of their videos awhile ago, before I ever even knew what printmaking was, and being blown away. Despite not having any idea what they were doing, I loved their dedication to craft, something that has always intrigued me. Thanks for bringing this shop to my mind again. In a way, I might not have gotten into printmaking without that first video I watched. Who knows?
